Heritage in Danger: Hashima City Office Building by Junzo Sakakura

Docomomo International has been made aware through Docomomo Japan of the intensified demolition threats to the Hashima City Office Building by Junzo Sakakura.

The Hashima City Office Building is located a 5-minute walk from Junzo Sakakura’s birthplace, was completed in 1959 and received the prestigious Architectural Institute of Japan Award. This is one of the most important buildings among Junzo Sakakura’s works, and it has been selected as one of DOCOMOMO Japan’s top 100.

The Hashima City Council has made the decision to demolish this valuable building after April 2024. DOCOMOMO Japan has requested Hashima City Council twice to postpone the demolition. The impending demolition has sparked opposition from local volunteers and architects across Japan who are advocating to preserve it.
