Registrations are now open: Docomomo ISC/ID + Docomomo Portugal Conference “Modernist women interior designers and artists”

Registrations are now open for the International Conference organized by Docomomo ISC/ID and Docomomo Portugal on “Modernist women interior designers and artists: to deepen the reading of the different expressions of female creativity”. The event will take place on 7-9 March 2024, in Lisbon and Cascais, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The conference will be held on 7-8 March at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, followed by organized visits to MUDE, Museum of Design in Lisbon, and Casa das Histórias in Cascais on 9 March.

The objective of the conference is to deepen the multifaceted and diverse creativity of women in the context of modernity, addressing their significant contribution in the fields of interior architecture, design, and the arts. The modern movement, characterized by a commitment to progress and comfort, is marked by widely celebrated male figures, while numerous women designers and artists who made equally notable contributions to modern production remain forgotten or little recognized. In Portugal, the situation is even more serious, although in recent years there have been new studies, exhibitions, and publications that have sought to remove many authors from anonymity. This conference aims to contribute to filling this historical inequality, promoting a deeper and more humanistic understanding of modern culture.

Organized by Docomomo International Specialist Committees on Interior Design (ISC/ID) and Docomomo Portugal, further details can be found on the conference website.
