Heritage in Danger – Generalštab Modernist Complex in Belgrade, Serbia

Our colleagues from Docomomo Serbia have informed us of the following situation regarding the Generalštab Modernist Complex in Belgrade, Serbia:

Heritage in Danger: Nikola Dobrović, Generalštab Modernist Complex, Belgrade 1956-65

For more than a year, the Serbian professional community of architects, civic engineers, urban planners, landscape designers, and conservators, has been immersed in an exhausting battle to protect the complex of Dobrović’s Generalštab – his only realization in Belgrade, partly damaged during the NATO bombing of 1999. Despite being listed as a cultural monument, the government of Serbia accepted an offer for the development of the Trump Hotel and luxury housing after the demolition of the Generalštab. Numerous letters from Serbian professional organizations were sent to the government and international support was received from ICOMOS, Europa Nostra, and UNESCO. However, none of these voices stopped the government from delisting the Generalštab. There is still hope that the furious public protesting against illegal decisions and nontransparent agreements with the investors will change the course of Generalštab’s future.
