제4회 도코모모 코리아 디자인공모전 (The 4th docomomo korea design competition)
+ 주 제 : 구 서울역사 어떻게 살릴 것인가? + 계획 대상지 : 구 서울역사와 서울역의 장기 발전 마스터플랜에 따른 영향권역 + 공모취지 1925년 9월 준공되어 80여 년 동안 서울의 상징적 이미지로 간직하고 있었던 구서울역사는 2004년 경부고속철도의 개통과 더불어 준공된 새로운 서울역사와는 어떠한 연관성도 갖지 못한 채 끊임없이 이어지는 사람들의 분주한 흐름에서 외면당하고 있다. 일제 강점기때는 일본에 의한 서양문화 유입의 상징적 공간이 되었고 신파조로 지칭되는 당시의 새로운 문화와 정보, 자원이 모여드는 곳이 되었다. 1960년대 1970년대를 거쳐 오면서 구서울역사는 지방에서 상경하는 사람들에게는 서울에서의 성공적 삶에 대한 희망 그 자체가 되었다. 철도에서 자동차 중심으로 생활문화가 바뀐 1980년대 이후에도 서울역사는 펜덴티브(Pendentive)와 돔(Dome)의 조합 원리를 독창적으로 재해석함으로서 서양의 고전적 형태원리를 완벽하게 소화하여 얻어낸 안정적이고 수려한 외관 덕분에 여전히 서울 이미지에 대한 중심적 역할을 수행할 수 있었다. 그러나 이렇듯 우리의 근⋅현대적 삶의 궤적을 담아왔던 구서울역사는 투명성, 개방성, 속도감 등으로 상징되는 거대한 유리 상자 역사의 첨단적인 시대적 이미지에 밀려 관심에서 조차 점차 멀어져가고 있다. 굳이 런던 워털루 역사(Waterloo Station)를 예로 들지 않더라도 옛 역사와 새로운 역사가 조화롭게 유지될 수는 없는 것인가 ? 우리 삶에 대한 궤적들은 지워져야만 하는 흔적일 뿐일까? 서울역사를 살려내는 일은 과거의 우리 삶에 대한 집착이 아닌 현재의 삶과 미래의 삶에 대한 새로운 가치를 찾아내는 일이다. 도코모모 코리아가 쉽게 서울역사를 포기하지 못하는 것도 바로 이 때문이다.
