Advocacy Efforts Have Positive Repercussions: Werdmuller Centre
by Roelof Uytenbogaardt, Cape Town, South Africa, 1975
DATE: 9/8/2017
“Designed by one of Roelof Uytenbogaardt, one of the leading South African architects of the 20th century, the Werdmuller Centre was built for Old Mutual, as a shopping centre with attached offices, and completed in 1975. Possessing strong Corbusian influences the building is an instantly recognisable product of the Modern Movement.”

After an eleven-year campaign by Docomomo South Africa that saw the Werdmuller Centre elevated to a Provincial Heritage Site (Grade 2) based on it excellence in architectural design, Docomomo South Africa with the full support of Docomomo International, has successfully rallyed to save the former shopping mall.

The Heritage Western Cape Impact Assessment Committee made the final decision in accordance with the comments made against the proposal for redesign, which included a large scale demolition of the building. The refusal of this proposal ensures that the Werdmueller will retain its character for years to come!
