O Arquitecto de Lisboa [The Architect of Lisbon], a documentary by Joaquim Vieira with the participation of the Chair of Docomomo International, Prof. Ana Tostoes, as scientific consultant, is now available online.

This documentary narrates the life and work of one of the pioneers of the Modern Movement in Portugal, Pardal Monteiro (1897-1957), who largely contributed to Lisbon architecture during the central decades of the 20th century.

“The architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro transformed the face of Lisbon in the central decades of the twentieth century with such emblematic projects as Cais do Sodré Railway Station, Instituto Superior Técnico, Instituto Nacional de Estatística, Seminary of Olivais, Igreja de Nossa Senhora of Fátima, the building of the Diário de Notícias, the Gares Marítimas de Alcântara and the Rocha do Conde de Óbidos, the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering, the University City (Rectory and Faculties of Law and of Letters), Tivoli Hotels, Mundial and Ritz, or the National Library.” (in Rtp)
Joaquim Vieira´s documentary highlights the most outstanding aspects of the creative legacy of Pardal Monteiro, through the reflection on the unpublished manuscript the architect wrote in the last years of life. Alongside with all contributions to this production, in particular his daughter’s participation, this manuscript and the altogether testimonies consolidate not only his personality but also his aesthetic options.

Porfírio Pardal Monteiro was born in Sintra, Portugal, the youngest of six siblings. In 1904 he went to live in Lisbon with one of his brothers, city where he studied Architecture at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon (1910-1919). While still at the School of Fine Arts Pardal Monteiro started to work in the studio of Miguel Ventura Terra, one of the most reference architects of the beginning of the century in Portugal. From 1919 on, Pardal Monteiro dedicates his professional life to the practice of architecture becoming later a Professor as well.
