Modscapes Kick-Off Event: Modernist Reinventions of the Rural Landscape
20th -22th March, Milan, Italy
DATE: 20/3/2017
The Modscapes Kick-Off Event - Modernist Reinventions of the Rural Landscape -, that took place last 20 to 22 March, in Milan, Italy. The goal is to present the MODSCAPES project, funded by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) within the programme "Uses of the Past".
MODSCAPES deals with 20th-century large-scale agricultural development schemes, entailing reclamation works, inner colonisation, resettlement processes, landscape architecture. Conceived and implemented in the different geographical and political contexts, in Europe and beyond, such schemes for the modernization of the countryside were functional to nation-building policies.
The resulting rural landscapes were largely overlooked as a transnational research topic, although they provided a testing ground for the ideas and tools of environmental and social scientists, architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects and artists, converging around shared challenges. While comparing different case studies, the project also aims at framing these contexts against future change and challenges.

Docomomo International is a partner of MODSCAPES project and it was represented in this event by Miles Glendinning, Professor of Architectural Conservation at University of Edinburgh and Chair of  Docomomo International ISC Urbanism+Landscape.
