Meeting in Otsuchi
18th-19th March, Otsuchi, Japan
The Chair of Docomomo International, Prof. Ana Tostões, did a tour around Otsuchi and Kirikiri, Japan, last weekend, 18th-19th March, with professors and students from The University of Tokyo, to visit modern architecture of the area.
Due to the tragic tsunami deluge of Otsuchi on March 11, 2011, 52% of the residential area (= 431ha) was submerged under water and 1,284 lives were lost. The death toll reduced the population by nearly 10%. About 4,000 people who lost their houses are still living in temporary housing scattered over 48 sites. Prof. Ana Tostões, met Ken Sasaki, Manager for City Council Secretariat, at the town office, to know all the efforts that are being done to reconstruct the city and all the facilities with the Otsuchi Master Plan for Reconstruction.
