Docomomo International wishes to convey the most sincere condolences at the passing of the great Portuguese architect, Raúl Hestnes Ferreira, to his family and friends. 

Raúl Hestnes Ferreira
Son of the portuguese writer José Gomes Ferreira (1900-1985), Raul Hestnes Ferreira was born in Lisbon in 1931. Hestnes Ferreira studied at the School of Fine Arts of Porto and Lisbon, where he received the architect´s degree in 1961. After, he studied at the Helsinki Faculty, in Finland, and in the Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania with a fellowship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

During this period, he collaborated in architecture studios in Helsinki and with Louis Kahn, in Philadelphia (1963-1965). In Portugal, Hestnes Ferreira collaborated with the architects Arménio Taveira Losa and Cassiano Barbosa (1955-1957).

Among other buildings, Hestnes Ferreira designed the House of Albarraque (1960), the House of Culture of Beja (1976), the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon (1993) and Marvila´s Library (2014).

Among several prizes, in 2004 was awarded the Prémio Valmor for the new building of ISCTE - Lisbon University Institute, and in 2007 received an honoris causa doctorate degree from the FCT-University of Coimbra, which architecture department was co-founded by him, in 1988.

Information on the funeral ceremonies: Raúl Hestnes Ferreira will be tomorrow, 14th February, in Igreja da Graça, Lisboa, since 5pm and will be cremated on Thursday, 15th February, at Cemitério do Alto de S. João.
