Isaías Cardoso (1922-2017)
Architect Isaías Cardoso passed away on 13th February 2017
Docomomo International wishes to convey the most sincere condolences, at the passing of the Portuguese architect Isaías Cardoso, to his family and friends.
Graduated from the formerly Oporto School of Fine Arts and considered one of the architects responsible for the introduction of the modern architecture in Figueira da Foz and Central Portugal, Isaias Cardoso was greatly influenced by the Modern Movement architecture, especially that which was being developed in Brazil.
Born in Alhadas, his work can be abundantly found in the districts of Coimbra, Aveiro and Leiria. The most significant projects are in the city where he developed much of his work, Figueira da Foz, such as Piscina-Praia, an unavoidable urban reference and Grande Hotel da Figueira which marked the beginning of that city as a touristic reference.
Isaías Cardoso was distinguished as a honory member of the Portuguese Order of Architects in November of 2016. The work he developed during his professional life should be remembered with great esteem, honor and pride.
The funeral will be tomorrow, February 15th, with the procession starting at 10h30 from Capela Mortuária da Igreja Matriz de S. Julião in Figueira da Foz to the City´s Funerary Complex, where Isaías Cardoso remains will be cremated.
