International Docomomo Workshop: Education to Everybody / Structures in Ljubljana
24-28 August 2018, Ljubljana, Slovenia
DATE: 24/8/2018
Within the 15th International Docomomo Conference, Docomomo International, Docomomo Slovenia and the  ISC/Education and Training organised this year´s International Docomomo Workshop that was held between the 24th and the 28th August, in Ljubljana.

Working under the subject "Education to Everybody / Structures in Ljubljana", the 4-day workshop was focused on the use of generic structures as design tools, looking as references to school buildings and structures designed by the Slovenian Modern Movement architects Emil Navinšek and Edvard Ravnikar.

International and interdisciplinary student teams were challenged to propose sustainable interventions and extensions for one building, that could serve as a model for other of the 38 corridor-free school buildings that Navinšek designed nationwide.

The school buildings have been in continuous use for more than half a century and showed similar advantages and problems of renovation. Many of the schools were renovated, extended or altered in various ways. In the last decade, especially, renovations according to energy efficiency directives were carried out. However, such interventions were not coordinated, and solutions varied from building to building, in spite of Emil Navinšek´s systematic approach to design the school buildings originally. Therefore, it was expected from each team to present an intervention strategy that incorporated that, as well as, technical upgrading in terms of accessibility, energy efficiency, earthquake resistance and revision of classroom design.

The workshop took place in Emil Navinšek’s 1958s Majda Vrhovnik Primary School, right next to Cankarjev Dom, the Docomomo Conference venue.

The final results were presented on the first day of the Conference, and will be soon found
online.
